Takeaways from Tuesday's primaries as Democrats try to make Iowa inroads and defend California

The contours of one of this year’s premier U.S. Senate races are taking shape in Iowa while President Donald Trump’s endorsement streak ran into a roadblock there. Democrats have chosen a nominee for a U.S. House race in New Jersey that could decide who controls the chamber after November’s elections. But much of the focus Tuesday night is on California, home to Hollywood but not a governor’s race packing much star power. Primary elections were also held Tuesday in Montana, New Mexico and South Dakota.
