Americans have long been divided over executing the nation’s worst criminals. The country has had a longstanding but uneasy relationship with capital punishment that is highlighted by reactions to a botched lethal injection in Tennessee and the military’s plan for the first public execution in nearly 90 years. Both events have sparked renewed discussion about capital punishment. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s announcement Thursday that the military would livestream Hasan’s execution shocked even some capital punishment supporters and energized its opponents. But the failed execution of Christa Pike didn't have Republican lawmakers in Tennessee talking about abolition. Instead, they are considering other execution methods.
