Authorities say a 16-year-old opened fire at an elementary school in Bend, Oregon, killing three children and a teacher. He was shot by a person at the scene who pursued him into the school. Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz says authorities found the suspect dead inside the school minutes after the shooting Thursday was first reported. Krantz says the three children killed were aged 5, 8 and 11. A 7-year-old child and a teacher were injured and taken to a hospital in critical condition. Police say the attacker forced his way into the school by shooting at locked doors. A Bend police spokesperson says he was shot and went down inside the school shortly after officers arrived.
A teacher threw her phone at the teenage gunman who killed four people at an Oregon elementary school, then tackled and fought with him — likely saving lives before he was shot by a father who followed him into the building, police said Friday. Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz called her actions “heroic” during a news conference and said she was not injured. He identified the attacker as 16-year-old Griffin J. John, a former student at the school, and said all of the victims were shot in the same classroom. Authorities say John had been a special needs student at the school and had attacked a classroom with special needs students. Krantz says John fired as many as 15 shots from a 12-gauge shotgun.

That's according to the chief of police. Authorities say the three children killed were aged 5, 8 and 11. A 7-year-old child, 7, and a 54-year-old teacher were injured and taken to the hospital in critical condition. Police identified the shooter as a Bend resident. But they said they did not know if the shooter knew anyone at the school or whether he had attended.
