Tropical Storm Karina strengthens into a hurricane in the Pacific, could be a major storm this week

Tropical Storm Karina has strengthened into a hurricane in the Pacific Ocean. The National Hurricane Center says it could become a major storm this week. On Sunday, Karina was far out at sea and not threatening land. It had maximum sustained winds of 80 miles per hour, making it a Category 1 hurricane. The storm was about 820 miles southwest of Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula. It was moving northwest at 15 miles per hour. While Karina is expected to stay away from land, it could cause dangerous surf and rip currents along parts of southwest Mexico and the Baja California Peninsula.
