The Nevada National Guard has had a successful recruiting year, but the buck doesn't stop there, and say they look to expand on those results.

The Guard says it wants to be more diverse and allow more opportunities for under-represented communities.

On Saturday they held their general officer inspire event where senior leaders were conducting outreach to young people. They also brought in teachers, educators and first responders, so they can show them that the Guard can be a viable option for their students.

First responders say that understanding different cultures is crucial for serving the community.

"Ultimately we're all service-oriented individuals and as long as we can have more representation from across the different communities it really helps us and the National Guard service those communities that have so many different cultures and values that we want to be a part of," said Sergeant Matt Smith.

Participants were given a tour of the Nevada Army Guard Aviation Support Facility, then the Guard sat down with them to have an open discussion about what the guard can provide for people.

After that, they were treated to a one in a lifetime experience, a ride on a Chinook helicopter.

The helicopter flew over Lake Tahoe before returning back to the facility.

However, once it landed the real work started for teachers, who will be a conduit for students who may want to consider entering into the Guard.
