Assembly Speaker Steve Yeager will present legislation today that would improve access to healthcare for Nevada’s stuttering community.

Stuttering champion and NBA veteran Michael Kidd-Gilchrist will join Speaker Yeager at the Nevada Assembly to share his personal testimony as a person who stutters and how speech therapy changed his life.

Speaker Yeager introduced Assembly Bill 169, which would require that certain health insurance policies and health plans include coverage for certain forms of speech-language pathology to treat stuttering for Nevada residents under 18 years old. The bill would also eliminate certain limitations on coverage.

"Every child deserves the opportunity to communicate effectively and without barriers,” said Speaker Yeager. He continued, "When I learned of Michael Kidd-Gilchrist’s advocacy on this issue, it motivated me to take action and make sure that young Nevadans have robust access to treatment for stuttering."

"I recognize that I have a platform to advocate for meaningful change that can help those like myself who stutter," said stuttering advocate and NBA Veteran Michael Kidd-Gilchrist. "My appreciation runs deep for Speaker Yeager for his willingness to move things forward with this proposed legislation for Nevada families who are a part of the stuttering community."

The Nevada Assembly Democratic Caucus contributed to this report.
