Prescribed burning US Forest Service

Officials with the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit plan to continue prescribed fires this week to reduce overgrown vegetation and help protect local communities, infrastructure, and natural resources from wildfires.

The burns are expected to continue through fall and winter as weather conditions allow.

Two areas are scheduled for prescribed fires this week: Lilly Lake BE02 Rx, covering 8 acres in Benwood Meadow near Echo Summit, and Lilly Lake BE03 Rx, covering 42 acres in the same area.

These locations may be closed to the public for several days for safety. Officials advise people to watch for warning signs along roads near the burns.

Residents may notice smoke during the burns. Officials recommend checking AirNow online or via its app for air quality updates.

Drivers are advised to slow down and turn on their headlights if the smoke reduces visibility on the roads.

Weather conditions will be evaluated in the hours before a burn begins, and activities may be canceled if conditions are not favorable.

People can stay informed about scheduled burns through the Forest Service website, social media channels, and the Tahoe Fire & Fuels Team Prescribed Fire Map.Â
