Multiple records could be broken this week, not only in Reno but in South Tahoe as well. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday will be the warmest days of the week with records within reach. The average high in Reno this time of year is in the upper 40’s, but we’ll be in the mid 60’s Tuesday through Thursday. This puts the valley nearly twenty degrees above average for the beginning to middle of December.
Dress in layers this week, wearing a jacket in the morning, and a long sleeve shirt in the afternoon with pants. If you’re going for a jog around 3pm you might even get away with shorts.
The record to beat on Tuesday is 65 and the forecasted high is 64. If Reno makes it to 68 on Wednesday, we’ll be able to break the record for December 10th as well. The forecasted high on Wednesday is 66, and overnight lows will be in the 30’s, which is several degrees above average too.
South Tahoe should be seeing snow in December instead of breaking records with highs in the 60’s. Like Reno, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday will be the warmest days of the week. There won’t be much of a difference between Tahoe and Reno this week, with a ridge in place. The average high in Tahoe this time of year is 43 degrees.
Wondering where all the cold air is? While there is a huge ridge in the Pacific, a trough is keeping temperatures cold east of the Rockies. It's common for the two sides of the country to experience different weather at the same time.Â
