The Reno Police Department held a recruitment event for prospective recruits.

At seven in the morning on Saturday, applicants began a series of timed and untimed physical fitness events.

If an applicant failed any of the six events, they would fail the entire physical examination.

This form of recruitment allows officers to easily see an applicant's fitness level, and also makes it easier for them to move on with the process.

"We're trying very hard to move this lengthy process as quick as possible to get our applicants through. So basically, you have a physical test, a written test, then you will have your oral board interview," said Recruiting Officer Hunter Mercurio.

If an applicant makes it through all of this, they will become eligible to join a new program before starting the police academy.

"We're going to start up our early hire program in probably October or November, so you will be getting paid as a new recruit, as an early hire, to also get that experience to get a stable job. But you're also becoming a city employee before you even join the police academy, and this kind of helps bridge that gap of the waiting game," said Recruiting Officer Hunter Mercurio.

People in the new hire program will be able to meet officers, work out consistently and learn more about the job overall.
