Safe Embrace is appealing a decision from the Washoe County Board of Adjustment that denied the charitable organization's request to bring back 18 beds to its safe house.

The appeal will be heard by the Board of Washoe County Commissioners on Tuesday, October 17th at 10 a.m. at 1001 East Ninth Street, Building A in Reno.

Safe Embrace is a nonprofit working to support victims of domestic and sexual violence.

From January to June of 2022 their safe house operated at a capacity of 30 adults and 47 children. Safe Embrace was asked to reduce capacity while their permits were reviewed.

“Leaving an abusive relationship is the most dangerous and critical time for a victim because their abuser will do anything to maintain power and control,” said Afshan West, executive director at Safe Embrace. “While on our waitlist, victims are often living with their abuser and in extreme danger. This hearing has the potential to determine whether we can resume operations at the capacity our community desperately needs.”
