AAA is predicting record-breaking travel across the country over Thanksgiving week, with 80 million Americans expected to travel for the holiday.

They say every couple of years they've seen a steady increase in these numbers.

  • In 2019 77.7 million Americans traveled
  • In 2023 78.1 million Americans traveled
  • In 2024 79.9 million Americans traveled

John Treanor, the Spokesperson for AAA Nevada says they have seen gas prices decline a little bit, and they say this is good news for those traveling by car.

They say with the money families are saving they may be able to afford more fun on their vacations or holiday week.

"They're saving money when they're filling up," said Treanor. "They might choose to spend that money, to save, maybe on a night out at different restaurants or different experiences when they get to their destination."

"Gas prices are lower than they were last year by about 50 cents in Nevada," he adds. "They're lower than they were a week ago, a month ago, and we don't expect there to be a spike between now to Thanksgiving."

Treanor also points out if this week is your first time ever doing a road trip, maybe you're a new family or driving in bad weather for the first time, here are some things to keep in mind.

"Make sure your car is prepared," he said. "Just like you pack your bags when you're going on a trip, make sure your car is good to go as well. Check your tire pressure, check your battery, check your fluid level to make sure you have gas in the car when you leave."

He says you'll want to take these measures to make sure you don't run into trouble, and if you have to, get your car checked by a professional if you don't know how to do it yourself.

"If you don't feel comfortable doing it go to a service station and have them give your car a once over to make sure all the maintenance is there," said Treanor. "AAA is going to be busy with a lot of ERS stops (emergency roadside service). Our tow trucks are going to be out if these people need help and if you don't want to be one of those people needing help, of course we do love helping make sure your car is prepared."
