An investigation is underway after a fire broke out at the transfer station in Wadsworth Thursday night.Â
The Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe says the fire started at the station located at mile marker 2 on Highway 447, around 7 p.m. Â
Authorities say the fire is now contained to the transfer station area but say the fire may continue to burn for days while crews make sure it doesn't flare up.
People in the Wadsworth area with breathing conditions are advised to take extra precautions as the air quality will be diminished for the time being.
"To those affected by the Wadsworth transfer station fire: smoke from the fire may concentrate in certain areas depending on the wind speed and wind direction. Reduce your smoke exposure by creating an indoor environment that reduces exposure to and protects occupants from smoke. Close all windows and doors to reduce overall smoke exposure inside. Operate HVAC systems in the recirculate setting to keep outside air from coming in. Use a portable air filter in bedrooms. Please stay hydrated," says Tandra Roberts, Natural Resources Department Air Quality Specialist.
Fire crews that responded include North and Central Lyon County, Storey County, Silver Lake, Reno Fire, Truckee Meadows Fire, Air National Guard, as well as Pyramid Lake Fire and Rescue Crews from Nixon and Gerlach.
