Since 2008, every single boat that enters Lake Tahoe must be inspected for aquatic invasive species that pose a threat to the lake's ecosystem and its economy.

In September of last year, it was discovered that New Zealand mud snails made their way to the south shore of Lake Tahoe.

Invasive species like the New Zealand mud snail can out compete species that are native to Lake Tahoe with ease and they can spread very quickly.

Since the boat inspection program began, more than 113,000 boats have been inspected.

The New Zealand mud snail is as small as a grain of rice.

This is why it is crucial to clean your boat, drain the water, and dry it off so that you don't spread invasive species to other bodies of water such as Donner Lake or Echo Lake.
