peak wind gusts

Strong winds can make it feel a lot colder than it actually is. Wind gusts topped 50mph in many locations Wednesday, adding a chill to the air. The culprit for the wind was a cold front slicing through the region. The front moved through during the early afternoon, dropping temperature behind it.

Wind gusts exceeded 40mph at the Reno airport, with a peak wind gust of 44mph. This wasn’t the strongest wind event we’ve ever seen in the Reno area, but it was windy enough to hear it.

Wind gusts topped 70mph in the high Sierra, like at Mammoth Mountain, where they recorded a peak wind gust of 78mph. Palisades topped 80mph at 8700’.

Wind speeds will be lighter on Thursday, but it will still be breezy in the high Sierra. Wind gusts will also be strong over the weekend in the mountains, but light in the valley. When the temperature is 40 degrees, a wind gust of 30mph can make it feel like the upper 20’s.
