High-level negotiations in Switzerland seeking a permanent end to the Iran war ended with lower-level talks planned for the rest of the week. Iran and the United States agreed early Monday to create a “de-confliction cell” to address the fighting in Lebanon. U.S. and Iranian negotiators met in Switzerland for talks on key details of their interim agreement to end the war. A team led by U.S. Vice President JD Vance has met Iranian negotiators, including Iran Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.
Ship traffic has picked up in the Strait of Hormuz since Iran and the U.S. signed an interim deal to end a war that's constricted global oil supplies. But questions surrounding control of the waterway and tolls to cross it could interfere with ongoing negotiations. Last week’s provisional agreement allows Iran to manage the strait while holding discussions with Oman and six other Gulf states on the passage's future administration. In turn, Iran agreed not to charge transiting vessels for 60 days. President Donald Trump has suggested the U.S. could impose its own tolls if a final peace deal isn't reached. Legal experts say a toll regime would upend decades of international trade precedent.
