SELENA LA RUE HATCH
NAME: Selena La Rue Hatch
AGE: 35
PARTY AFFILIATION: Democrat
DAY JOB: Teacher
EDUCATION:
B.A. in History from Boston University and M.Ed. in Secondary Education from the University of Nevada, Reno
HOW LONG YOU HAVE LIVED IN NEVADA: My whole life (4th generation Nevadan)
WRITE A BRIEF (TWO TO THREE SENTENCES) SUMMARY OF YOUR PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE THAT WOULD ENABLE YOU TO PERFORM THE DUTIES OF THIS OFFICE:
I have served as the Assemblymember for District 25 for the past 2 years. I served on the Education, Natural Resources, and Judiciary committees through one regular session and 2 special sessions, and I am proud to be ranked as one of the most independent legislators in the building as I always put community before party. I am also a High School World History teacher and deeply tied to the community through my students and their families; my goal is always to center the voices of our children and families in the halls of power.
WHAT IS YOUR TOP PRIORITY IF ELECTED?
The most important issues facing our state are investing in and improving our public education system, improving access to affordable housing, combating climate change, and protecting abortion access in Nevada. My top priority will always be to ensure our children have the best chance for success and that our working families have the resources and rights they need to thrive.
IN JUST A FEW SENTENCES: WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE IS THE BIGGEST PROBLEM FACING OUR STATE, AND HOW WOULD YOU FIX IT?
There are so many more than 1 problem facing our state, so I will focus on the one that inspired me to run for office: public education. We must invest in our public schools AND ensure that money is making it to the classroom and used in the most effective way possible. I am proud of the record investment in our public schools that I helped make last session and I intend to continue that work next session. I introduced bills last session to limit our class sizes, reduce bureaucratic paperwork that distracts from learning, and make our diplomas mean something again, and I will continue advocating on all of those issues next session as well.
IN ONE SENTENCE: WHAT’S THE MOST IMPORTANT THING VOTERS SHOULD KNOW ABOUT YOU?
I am a parent and a teacher who ran to make life better for our children; that is the lens through which I evaluate policy and I will always be a champion for the people of Washoe county as a result.
YES OR NO: WILL YOU ACCEPT THE RESULTS OF THIS ELECTION, WHETHER YOU WIN OR LOSE?
Absolutely yes.
