Queen Elizabeth II says she has agreed to grant Prince Harry and Meghan their wish for a more independent life that will see them move part-time to Canada.

The British monarch says in a statement that a summit of senior royals on Monday was “constructive.”

She said it had been “agreed that there will be a period of transition in which the Sussexes will spend time in Canada and the UK.”

The queen says there are still issues to be resolved but she wants it done within days.

ORIGINAL STORY:

Britain's royal family is scrambling to contain the fallout from the surprise announcement by Prince Harry and his wife Meghan that they intend to step back from royal duties.

Harry and Meghan say they plan to split their time between the United Kingdom and and North America.

They also want to become financially independent.

But senior royals apparently weren't told in advance about the couple's decision.

The royal rift dominated Britain's media Thursday. Reports said that Queen Elizabeth II had not been informed of the decision.

The Sun and the New York Post described the departure as “Megxit," a play on Brexit.

Before marrying Harry last year, the Duchess of Sussex was an American actress known as Meghan Markle.
