Even though it does not feel like it meteorological spring has officially arrived. Temperatures typically start to cool in September, with our average high this time of year reaching the upper 80’s opposed to the 90’s. Friday September 4th is the latest Reno has ever reached 100 degrees at the airport. We could beat that record by a few days this year. The hottest we’ve been this summer season is 102 degrees. 108 is the all-time record, set back in 2007 and 2002. Â
It was the third hottest August on record at the Reno Airport. Reno was averaging nearly four degrees above normal for the daily high and about six degrees above normal for the low in August. We’ve been hotter. A couple years ago we saw twenty 100 degree days. It's only happened four times this year.
"I like warm days and I like that in Reno it always cools down in the evenings. So it's kind of tolerable,” said resident Lisa Kincaid.
We usually do cool off at night. However, we did tie the record for the warmest August night in Reno on August 16th this year. The low was 74 degrees. While daytime highs will be well above normal this weekend, we will cool off at night. Lows will be in the mid 60’s both Saturday and Sunday. Dry air tends to heat up quickly during the day and cool off quickly at night. This is why we can catch a break at night. Muggy climates typically stay warmer overnight.Â
"I'm actually looking forward to fall, it's usually cooler. It's my favorite time of the year. Yeah I'm done with the heat,” said local resident Ruth Gregory.Â
Mother Nature has other plans this year. The Climate Prediction Center gives us a good chance of being above normal this month. The potential is especially high over the next couple of weeks. Triple digits are possible through early next week, and 90’s will last through at least the end of the upcoming workweek.Â
