RTC Holds Open House on Sparks Boulevard Corridor

A major road in Sparks could be getting a face-lift in the coming year.

"Sparks is a city that continues to grow," said Joe Harrington, Public Information Officer for the Regional Transportation Commission of Washoe County. "We want to able to accommodate future growth here in the city of Sparks."

On Thursday night, the RTC hosted an open house for people to give their thoughts on how to improve the Sparks Boulevard Corridor, which stretches from Greg Street up to Pyramid Way. The RTC had concepts for improving traffic flow and safety along the road.

For example, they're looking to potentially add lanes to the area around Baring Boulevard because of the unusual amount of traffic there during the peak hours. RTC says it's currently nine minutes on average to get out of that area, but they estimate it could be longer in the future.

"It is estimated through projections that in the year 2035, it might take approximately 20 minutes if there are no improvements done on Sparks from the area of Greg Street up to Baring Boulevard," Harrington said.

Keep in mind, this is all still in the planning stages. Officials will continue to take public input and include it in their final draft later this year to take to Sparks City Council and the RTC Board.

"If they approve those recommendations, as funding is identified, we'll be able to implement some of the improvements and enhancements in the area," Harrington said.
