"We have received funding from the United Way to help families with utility and rental assistance," said Darren Trimmer, Washoe County Coordinator for Salvation Army.
The funding comes from the State of Nevada Emergency Assistance fund through United Way, and the total is split between Reno and Carson City. Officials say that calls for assistance have increased 10 times their normal average since the pandemic.
"People have not been working, and rent is coming due...and even though they don't have to pay it right now because the Governor has put a halt on it, the rent is stacking up and once everything opens up, it will be difficult to pay 2, 3, 4 months’ rent," said Trimmer.
The application process for one month's worth of rent or mortgage, and utility assistance due to hardship caused by the COVID-19 pandemic varies by location, but is on a first come first serve basis.
Trimmer says that if applying in Reno to fill out an online application first at salarmyreno.org, and in Carson City and other Norther Nevada counties, to call up the office first at 775-887-9120, extension 1.
