The Nevada State Parks has detected harmful algae blooms in the water, putting the lake under a HAB Warning. People are advised to use caution when swimming in the water.

High levels of cyanobacteria have cause the Division of Environmental Protection to raise the HAB Advisory to an HAB Warning for the Lahontan Reservoir.

People and pets should avoid direct contact with the water for the next two months until the algae bloom clears up.

The two agencies say the samples will support "the ongoing investigation of a death of a dog in the area."
