Nevada Highway Patrol troopers say several people were hurt Wednesday morning on I-80 near USA Parkway in a multiple vehicle crash that included 5-vehicles and a semi-truck.
The accident happened just before 6:00am Wednesday on I-80 eastbound just west of USA Parkway.
Troopers say a 1990 Maroon Chevrolet pickup truck driven by 21-year-old Luis E. Carreras-Moya of Reno was heading east on I-80 in the right lane behind a blue Toyota passenger vehicle, that was behind a red Dodge Stratus and a Toyota pickup. Due to congested traffic, the Toyota pickup stopped in the travel lane with the Dodge and Toyota passenger vehicle. They say the Chevy pickup was speeding and couldn't stop in time and hit the rear of the blue Toyota.
After striking the blue Toyota, the Chevy pickup spinned and struck the right side of the Toyota pickup. After being struck, the blue Toyota struck the rear of the Dodge which hit the rear of the Toyota pickup which was a second time. Troopers say just behind the initial crash a silver Volkswagen that was also traveling eastbound in I-80 in the left lane stopped to avoid the initial crash and was struck in the rear by a white Peterbilt semi-truck hauling two trailers driven by 49-year-old Raimondas Kurmonavicius of Reno.
The passenger from the Chevy pickup was transported to Renown Regional Medical Center with serious head injuries. Both occupants of the blue Toyota were transported to Renown with serious injuries to lower extremities and the chest. The lone occupant of the Volkswagen was transported to Renown for claimed injuries to the neck.
NHP says the Chevy truck driver was cited for failure to use due care, while the semi-truck driver was cited for speed too fast for roadway/traffic congestion.
Troopers say alcohol or drugs were not involved in the accident.
