Sheriff's Office to Hold Free Citizen Corps Emergency Preparedness Academy

The Washoe County Sheriff's Office says the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) is taking applications for people wanting to serve.

Officials said CERT provides residents with information they need to help save lives and reduce trauma in the event of an emergency.

The training includes disaster preparedness, emergency medical techniques, fire safety, light search and rescue, disaster psychology and terrorism awareness education.

There's approximately 280 volunteers currently serving the Sheriff's Office Citizen Corps Program (CCP). The program consists of three teams: CERT, the Rail Auxiliary Team (known as the RAT Pack) and the Citizens Homeland Security Council (CHSC).

CERT volunteers were recognized by Governor Sisolak in April for their immediate response during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The program provides community outreach, preparedness education and added support to emergency responders during large scale emergencies. Some of the services the volunteers provide include: traffic control, staffing first aid booths, helping at special events like the Reno Air Races, Reno Rodeo, Balloon Race, and Community Safety Day.

No special skills are required. You must be 18 years old to participate in the CERT program.
