The Washoe County School District is almost finished with installing a new single-point entry system at all elementary and middle schools.
"I'm a parent myself so it is a huge peace of mind just knowing we have an extra safety measure," said Teresa Golden, Director, Planning and Design at the WCSD.
The system has been in works for the last three years. However, the district says it completed them a year ahead of the original goal.
"The project was supposed to be completed a year from now, but the community asked us to step that schedule up," said Golden.Â
The system was recently installed at the new Nick Poulakidas Elementary School in South Reno. It starts with a camera outside.Â
"The camera would send this shot to the secretaries who are behind the glass," said Don Angotti, Principal of the school.Â
If initially approved, a person can enter the lobby and give their I.D. to the secretary for secondary approval.Â
"The I.D. would be scanned through a computer background check, and if everything checks out a badge would print out through the LobbyGuard system," said Angotti.Â
At that point, a person would be allowed access to the school.
There are two noticeable aspects to the new system:
1) There are no door handles to access the building.
2) The lobby is protected by thick safety glass.
"It's to provide that safety aspect for somebody that were to come in to the school and have that safety piece for the staff," he said.
"It's imperative for our community that we provide a safe entry for all of our staff and students," said Golden.Â
