State Board of Education Lowers Requirement on GED Tests

For most of us when we think of High School Graduates we think of classrooms and a lot of pomp and circumstance. But getting a GED is a way to either graduate early or to get back in the game and become certified later on. And the Nevada State Board of Education has decided that a score of 145 is sufficient rather than the previously required 150. And they say they aren't lowering the scores as much as raising the bar.

"The GED was changed in 2014 and the new test is much harder than the previous one. The new one includes Algebra 2 and more writing modules and it's much more rigorous. After looking at the results we feel that a lower grade on the harder test, levels the playing field," said Greg Bortolin with the Department of Education.

He added that the State of Nevada was simply getting in line with the standards set for more than 30 other states.

And what it all means is that about 300 students who took the GED since January of 2014 and scored between 145 and 149 are actually eligible for their certificates.
