The hot days of summer are here and that's sending a lot of people to pools and beaches, so officials want to remind people to take some safety measures, like having a life vest jacket, knowing your limits and not swimming too far out.

"Especially in cold water up in Tahoe, but even in the marina it could happen, cause its fairly deep, the water is cold," says Washoe County Sheriff Darin Balaam.

According to the Washoe County Medical Examiner's Office this year, they had three drownings so far. In 2019 they had four.

Officials say if you see someone drowning, make sure to call 911 as soon as possible. Do not put yourself in a situation where you can become a second victim, instead try to provide them with a tool where they can self rescue.

"We do find often that drowning victims have been drinking alcohol, it increases your chances for hypothermia and muscle cramping if you are out swimming," says Aaron Abbott, with REMSA.
