Not all heroes wear capes, right? Well even during a time of global crisis the Nevada Department of Veteran Services (NDVS) says you can save a life by completing the Mayor's Challenge to Prevent Suicide.
The Mayor's Challenge is an online suicide prevention training course offered through the PsychAmor Institute. The two courses are S.A.V.E Training and 15 Things Veterans Want You to Know.
The Office of Mental Health and Suicide Prevention reported than an average of 17 veterans nationwide died by suicide every day in 2019. NDVS says it hopes people will participate to decrease that number. So, NDVSÂ in collaboration with Las Vegas Mayor Carol Goodman, Sparks Mayor Ron Smith, Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve are extending this challenge to anyone who wants to accept it including veterans, city and county leaders, organizations, businesses, agencies and community members.
NVDS also says even though the video training refers to veterans, the principles you will learn are universal. Kim Donohue, the Suicide and Homelessness Prevention Program Manager for NDVS said the skill people can learn are crucial now more than ever amid the coronavirus pandemic.
"People are worried about when their next paychecks are coming in. We're in isolation, we're in closed quarters. We're seeing domestic abuse rise in those calls. We're seeing anxiety and stress, it's all that uncertainty." said Donohue. "Suicide can affect anyone. It doesn't discriminate."
If you or someone you know is struggling with thoughts of suicide you can call the 24 hour national hotline at 1-800-273-8255 or text 838255.
