SWAT Team Uses Negotiation Robot To Arrest Barricaded Woman In Verdi

Julie Munoz was booked into the Washoe County Sheriff's Office Detention Facility after allegedly breaking into a Verdi home and barricading herself inside Wednesday night.

Washoe County Sheriff's Office, SWAT, K9 deputies and the Sparks Police Department responded to the scene, shortly after 7 p.m. on Hansen Drive.

A woman and her 12-year-old daughter came home and found signs someone was inside. They immediately called 911.

The homeowner's surveillance camera was able to show patrol deputies that there was someone inside and she was seen moving furniture in front of entry points to barricade herself inside.

Information provided to deputies at the time was that the homeowner had a weapon that was accessible in the house.

Deputies tried to communicate with the suspect for about two hours.

Around 9:15 p.m., the SWAT team sent in a Transcend Vantage Tactical robot. The robot is on tracks similar to a snowcat and can traverse obstacles, drive over carpet and climb most sets of stairs.

The robot is equipped with a two-way communication radio as well as cameras. The robot can enter a building while deputies remain safe and they can negotiate with a person.

The robot allowed for a successful negotiation and the woman came out willingly.

Munoz is being charged with one felony county of residential burglar and one misdemeanor count of resisting a public officer.
