Swedish Drone Company Expanding to Northern Nevada

The University of Nevada's autonomous systems innovation center announced on Thursday that a Swedish drone company will be moving some operations to Reno.

SmartPlanes was founded in 2005 and develops state-of-the-art commercial drones for aerial mapping, remote sensing and surveillance.

The drones it makes are fixed wing and are built to withstand harsh conditions.

"It is differentiating from other drones in the market, simply because we made it very, very rugged.  So it will take a lot of beating, it will fly in extremely strong winds, it will fly in rain, snow color or warm it doesn't really matter,” says Roger Ohlund, Chief Marketing Officer, SmartPlanes.

The company plans to employ 20 people in the northern Nevada area within a year.
