Fans have decided the new name for a rivalry game between Reno 1868 FC and Sacramento Republic FC.
The team announced Tuesday that in a poll of more than 600 people, fans chose "Donner Pass Derby" as the name for Saturday's soccer match at Greater Nevada Field. The match will be the third between the two squads this season but the first with the new name.
“We are happy to continue our rivalry with Sacramento with this name chosen by the fans,” Reno 1868 FC general manager Andy Smith said. “The ‘Donner Pass Derby’ is and will remain one of the top rivalries in the USL.”
Sacramento took the first match this season in a 2-0 win the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on May 31. Reno fought back with a 2-0 win of its own on June 10 at Greater Nevada Field.
Saturday’s match begins at 8 p.m. at Papa Murphy’s Park in Sacramento. Reno 1868 FC will host a watch party at Great Basin Brewing Co.
