Despite COVID-19, a holiday tradition carried on Sunday afternoon, to honor the families of those who served and sacrificed their lives for our country.

The third annual Gold Star Tree Lighting Ceremony was held at the Atlantis Casino Resort Spa. A couple of ceremonies were held separately throughout the day to follow state and county coronavirus restrictions.

The Blue Star Tree, which honors families of active local servicemen and women will be held at a later date.

Once the trees are set up, they will be displayed at the Atlantis until the new year, serving as a symbol of support, and a reminder to families that their loved ones are not forgotten.

Anyone is invited to visit the displays; people are also encouraged to show support virtually if unable to visit in-person.

"During the holidays, these folks, these parents, their loved ones... It's a missing chair at their table." said Jon Yuspa, the Founder of Honor Flight Nevada. "Think and reflect about the families that you know, 365 they remember this especially during the holidays. So if we can turn this tradition and if the community can rally around a little bit."
