Super Bowl snacks are almost as important as the big game. And these days they go way beyond chips and dip. Smith's Assistant Store Director Brandon Hood says, in addition to the usual snacks, people are buying fruit and vegetable trays for the big game. "I would probably choose celery over chips. Go with a veggie tray, a fruit tray," said Hood.
This year the produce aisle at Smith's in south Reno is competing with the snack aisle; featuring ready-made fruit and veggies, cut up and packaged daily in the store. You can even choose freshly made sushi, in party trays.
Of course the chips aisle is still very popular for Super Bowl snacks. But more shoppers are looking for a mix of healthy and fun. Louise Lintz of Reno says people are more conscious of their health. “They just look at everything they buy. They check the labels," she said.
When you shop for Super Bowl snacks you can save a few calories here and there by serving guacamole instead of the higher calorie queso. "I like avocado dip. I put salsa in it and lemon," said Lintz.
Experts say you can offer your guests a little of everything and let them choose. "Vegetables, fruit, beer, soda pop, humus, sushi, chips and dips,” recommends Hood. “Every aisle we've got chips and dip,” he added.
Lintz tries to mix it up on Super Bowl Sunday. "It's just a fun day. My husband likes hot dogs, so I'm always giving him hot dogs and chips and fruit. A lot of fruit, always," she said. Another tip is to try to squeeze in a few jumping jacks every time your team scores. And change out your soda for one of the new sparkling water drinks.
