If not done the right way, masks and gloves could actually get you sick. It's important to know how to properly use them for your safety.

First thing you need to do is wash your hands with soap and water, or use hand sanitizer. The you have to check your mask for any holes or tears.

"Once your mask looks good, you are going to look for tears and holes; not touching the front of your mask you fit it to the bridge of your nose if you have a metal plate, and tuck the bottom of your mask to create a nice seal," says Shelby Hunt, at Northern Nevada Medical Center.

To get the mask off you still want to be careful.

"When you get ready to take your mask off, you are going to undo the loops, not touching the front of your mask and dispose the mask," says Hunt.

She also says that washing your hands is better than gloves. If you do want to wear them, its important to do it right. Unless your doctor asked you to use gloves, only those on the front lines should have them on. She says it could be spreading more germs than protecting you.Â
