People of all ages spent Sunday clearing off their sidewalks and driveways, after Saturday’s big snowstorm. By noon, Tim Shepersky had already shoveled 2 driveways, several walkways, and the sidewalks in front of 3 houses.“The snow is not sticky. If you get it off the pavement early before it freezes, that's the time to do it. Push the snow instead of throwing it because it’s better on your back,” said Shepersky. He has been using the same shovel for the last 35 years. For a lot of people though, they are looking to buy a new one.
“After 10 years, you think you have supplied everyone in Reno with a snow shovel. But then it snows like this, everyone comes in and buys another shovel,” said Tim Carter who is the owner of Carter Brothers Ace Hardware. The store sold off half their supply of shovels, before 2 pm.
“Metal is great at the bottom to scrape ice away. But you wouldn't want metal to scrap up your deck or wood porch or something like that. You also want a sturdy handle,” said Carter Brothers retail associate Buddy Harris. If you don't shovel in time, then the snow turns to ice. And you've got to make a second purchase…ice melt. “Ice melt is literally flying off the pallets we have. We had a full pallet this morning. And it’s about 75% gone, “ said Harris. People also need to be selective on whether to use ice melt, and which type of melt they use. “I would recommend that you get something that is pet friendly. Your dogs eat that and it's going to make them sick,” said Harris. Ice melt has been known to take away paint, and effect pavement. But safety comes first. So you have to make the pavement around your house and your driveway is clear. Because don't want kids or seniors to slip, fall, and hurt themselves.
