No one wants to spend the Christmas holiday filling out police reports for stolen goods.

The holiday season provides thieves with more opportunities to take things, in many cases, right off our porches or out of driveways and parking lots.

Law enforcement advises never to leave your car running while running errands, as that is a quick way to get it stolen, leaving you stuck in the cold.

Reno Police Chief Kathryn Nance says, "We get reports of people's cars that have been stolen because they are left idling out front. Or, we also see it where people run into a gas station or a convenience store and leave their car running because it's cold, so they don't want to turn it off, and then their car gets stolen. So, if you're not with your car, you need to have it locked."

Here are some simple safety tips to keep your car from being an attractive target for thieves.

Avoid leaving wallets, phones, electronics, or bags visible. Always lock doors and close windows, even for quick stops.  Limit belongings left in your car and stay in well-lit areas.

Chief Nance adds, "So, a lot of people are getting more and more things delivered. We are just coming off black Friday and Cyber Monday, so all of your packages are probably arriving this week, and so if you know you're going to have packages arrive, please try and work with your neighbors, and say 'Hey, can you help me look for packages? I'll help you look for yours.'"

Christmas means lots of shopping, online orders, and deliveries. If you know you're going to be out of town, ask a trusted neighbor to pick up your packages while you're away.

According to law enforcement, installing doorbell cameras or motion-activated lights will significantly decrease crime. Using package lockers, delivery holds, or requiring a signature on delivery makes a difference. Be sure to track deliveries and bring packages inside right away. Staying alert and always being aware of your surroundings is key to enjoying a safe holiday.
