September is Hunger Action Month, and the Food Bank of Northern Nevada (FBNN) is reminding the community how it can take action against food insecurity.

FBNN says some community members volunteer or donate, but even just talking about Hunger Action Month helps get the word out that every community is impacted by food, or the lack thereof.

“Right now, 1 in 6 of our kids don't know where their next meal is coming from,” said Jocelyn Lantrip, the Director of Marketing at FBNN. “If that's shocking to you, tell somebody else, because a lot of people don't know that. They don't know that that's happening right here in your community.”

The food bank purchased more food this year than normal due to need. Monetary donations help them do that and provide perishable items like dairy and meat to their partners and the community.

They are also asking for folks to volunteer, as this time of year is generally down for that.

The community may also participate in Hunger Action Month by donating cans of tuna to the annual Run on Tuna drive, which was started years ago by two local women who simply asked what was needed.

“Tuna is really great for the food bank because it is high in protein,” said Lantrip. “And that is one thing that we really lack here where protein is expensive as everybody knows. And so, people don't donate it often.”
