The Food Bank of Northern Nevada showed its support for our community by hosting a special distribution.
This distribution was a drive-through event, so we saw lots of people in their cars make their way through there.
Representatives of the food bank told us that, with the number of people they expect to see come through, this is the easiest way to get them in and out quickly.
Jocelyn Lantrip, the director of marketing for the Food Bank of Northern Nevada, told us, "We're doing a drive-through distribution today because we have a lot of food, a mix of perishables and non-perishables, and so it's the most efficient way for us to get food into a bunch of cars, as quickly as possible to get that perishable food out of the sun."
Representatives tell us that events like this happen frequently, but this one is special because it has a much bigger harvest to help as many people as possible.
Lantrip also said, "It's several boxes and several bags. We have some produce. We have chicken. We have some ham steaks. We have some snack bags. More ready-to-eat food that is non-perishable."
People we spoke with told us how grateful they are that organizations like the food bank are putting events like this on for the community.
They said seeing the number of people that showed up demonstrates how much this help is needed right now.
Zachary Haase, a North Valleys resident, said, "I'm glad that they're here, and I know, I've been here since 3:15pm and there's 20 or 30 cars in front of me. This is crazy how many people they can help, and it's just amazing."
Something that was mentioned throughout the event is the courage it takes to receive help.
They say they hope people know there's no shame in asking for help when unfortunate events occur.
Lantrip told us, "It really is something that we fight all the time. The stigma of not wanting to ask for help. And really it's community helping community. And there isn't any reason not to be out here and receiving some food if that will help you make the next couple of weeks a little bit easier."
