Wildcreek Golf Course to Reopen July 1

Wildcreek Golf Course will reopen on July 1st after the Washoe County Board of Commissioners approved an operations and management agreement with MAZZ Golf Management.

Wildcreek will reopen with the Executive Course and six holes from the Championship Course (the Creek Six) as well as practice putting and chipping greens.

Due to events associated with the closure of golf courses pursuant to a directive by Governor Sisolak in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Washoe County lost the golf course operator for Wildcreek in April. Washoe County has had a contractual relationship with MAZZ Golf Management at Sierra Sage Golf Course for the past decade and Mike Mazzaferri, President of MAZZ Golf Management, approached the county with a request to operate Wildcreek for this summer season.

The operations and management contract extends through Nov. 15, 2020.

Washoe County has title to Wildcreek Golf Course. The Reno-Sparks Convention and Visitor’s Authority (RSCVA) developed Wildcreek opening the 9 hole course with clubhouse and practice range in 1978 and the Championship Course in 1979.

The RSCVA transitioned its property interest in the Wildcreek site to the Washoe County School District which identified the location for a new high school on 87 acres on the northern potion of the golf course.

According to the Washoe County Staff Report, on July 19, 2019, Washoe County received approximately $3.1 million from the School District for land and water rights. Funds were deposited in the Wild Creek Golf Course Fund which will only be utilized solely for the Wildcreek Property and not for the other Washoe County golf properties.

Based on this season, MAZZ Golf Management will help determine the sustainability of a golf course on a smaller site, Mazzaferri said.

According to the staff report from Assistant County Manager Dave Salero, following the 2020 golf season Washoe County staff will provide the Board of County Commissioners with a report and options for the future of the Wildcreek property.
