Vehicle Registration Holds for Reno Drivers with Unpaid Parking Tickets

Starting this year, there will be no vehicle registration renewals for Reno drivers with unpaid parking tickets. It's part of an effort to combat the issue that city officials say has gotten out of hand.

The city has coordinated with the DMV to place a hold on vehicle registrations for drivers who have not responded to several notices of unpaid parking tickets. City officials say the problem has grown in recent years, in part due to the population increase.

In September, they gave notice to 3,500 drivers with tickets. Outstanding debts currently exceed $150,000. Ashley Turney, Reno City Clerk says, "Our outstanding parking ticket debt right now with the City of Reno is enough to actually fund another public safety officer."

The effort went into effect yesterday, January 2nd.

if you do have a hold on your registration, once you pay that ticket, the hold will be lifted within the hour.
