On Friday night in South Lake, the homestanding 3-1 Vikings welcomed a team from across the state line, as the also 3-1 Fernley Vaqueros made the trip for some Friday Night Lights action.
Both the JV and Varsity teams played as South Lake would defeat Fernley 27-12 in the JV matchup, but Fernley would get the better of them in the Varsity game as the Vaqueros routed South Lake 54-14.Â
We spoke with some Fernley parents about making the trip up to Tahoe to support their kids.Â
"I love seeing the kids, some of the kids that you've coached," said Roman Sisneros, a local youth coach and parent of a Fernley Football coach. "I mean, I've been a part of this for 17 years. Now, to be seeing some of these kids, I have nephews, and we have just family, friends, and people that you've been associated with for years. Seeing them out on the field is really cool."Â
Other parents like Oscar Mora and Makayla Barnes also touched on just how important the support for the kids is.Â
"I watched my son play Pop Warner for eight years, and now he's a JV starter," said Mora. "He's only a freshman, so it's exciting, very exciting. You know we had to be here to support our kids. I mean, when they see you as a parent, support them, it gives them more initiative to go out and play hard."
Barnes, a mother of one of the players, says, "Everyone supports. The whole town supports. Fernley, being a small town, really does help having the parents and just the community to come out to watch them."Â
With Friday Night Lights continuing to ramp up as we head into fall, it is exciting to see all the community, competition, and fun that some of these schools have. For Sisneros, it is all about supporting the kids and being loud and proud of it.
"We're loud and we're obnoxious, so to say, right? But in a positive way. But we love to support our community and love to support our kids."
