Mountain West Announces 2016 Football All-Conference Teams and Individual Honors

With a tournament win and a runner-up finish this month, Nevada men's golf sophomore Joey Vrzich has been named the Mountain West Golfer of the Month.

This is the first conference honor for Vrzich and is just the fourth conference golfer of the month or week award given to a Nevada player since the Wolf Pack joined the Mountain West in 2013. Vrzich produced an incredible start to the 2018-19 season, winning his first collegiate tournament at the Badger Invite and following that up with a tie for second place at the Husky Invitational.

During the season-opening Badger Invite, Vrzich tied the tournament course record with a final round of 65, which also set a career low for the southern California native. He began the day one shot back of the 36-hole leader and traded the lead back and forth until he reached the back nine. Vrzich played the final nine holes at 6-under par, which included a sequence of birdie, birdie, par, eagle, birdie, birdie on holes 10-15.

With all three of his rounds for the event under par, he finished at 13-under par, three shots better than runner-up Lachlan Barker of Iowa State. For the month he averaged a scoring average of 69.5 through six rounds of play and totaled 24 birdies. At the Husky Invitational, Vrzich was just three shots shy of winning a second consecutive tournament.

Nevada wastes little time in getting back to competition as the team will compete in the Nick Watney Invitational Oct. 1-2 at Dragonfly Golf Club in Madera, California.
