The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) released chain control restrictions on certain area roads within Eastern Kern, Inyo and Mono Counties on Tuesday:
On U.S. Highway 395:
- R1 chain controls are in effect in the following locations:
- From five miles north of the junction with State Route 203 to Lee Vining
On State Route 203:
- R1 chain controls are in effect in the following locations:
- From Forest Trail Road to the Mammoth Mountain Inn
On State Route 168 East:
- R1 chain controls are in effect in the following locations:
- From the junction of U.S. Hwy 395 to the junction of State Route 266
On State Route 167:
- R1 chain controls are in effect in the following locations:
- From the junction of U.S. Hwy 395 to the Nevada State Line
On State Route 158:
- R1 chain controls are in effect in the following locations:
- From the south junction of U.S. Hwy 395 to 3.5 miles north of June Lake Village
Chain Requirement Levels:
- Restriction 1 (R-1): Chains are required. Snow tread tires are allowed for passenger vehicles and light-duty trucks under 6,000 lbs. with front-wheel or rear-wheel drive.
- Restriction 2 (R-2): Chains are required on all vehicles except four-wheel drive or all-wheel drive vehicles equipped with snow tires on all four wheels.
- Restriction 3 (R-3): Chains are required on all vehicles, no exceptions.
