"I don't know if you're allowed to, but can you move closer to the screen..."
When you're the CEO of a company, usually you're the one telling people what to do.
"She's so subtle."
But today, Dr. Anthony Slonim, CEO of Renown Health, listens to a voicemail of recommendations from his daughter on his coming TEDx talk.
He is one of 26 presenters at the University of Nevada TEDx event at the Pioneer Center Saturday.
Speakers give short, powerful talks that share what they believe are innovative ideas.
"The models that we're using right here in Reno can be extrapolated to other communities around the country so it's a real opportunity to get that message out and have people learn from it."
Sure, 1,300 people will be in attendance at the sold out show, but the event is also about the global outreach.
"There are people in Anchorage, Alaska and London, England that will watch a TED talk from downtown Reno. And that's really how you really germinate these big ideas,” says University of Nevada TEDx organizer Jim McClenahan.
And that is what happened at the university's TEDx event in 2013 for then 13-year-old Logan LaPlante. He gave a talk on his homeschooling experience which now has over 8.8 million views on YouTube.
"We had no idea his talk would be as big as it was…But that is someone from Reno, who was 13, and who would have thought that that would be a result that we would get."
Dr. Slonim said he's a little nervous, yet very excited to give his TEDx talk.
But first…"and get rid of that damn pie slide, because that doesn't help you!"
Some tweaking.
