There's something different about the Washoe Republican Party these days. And it's the leadership. Adam Kahn is only 24 years old but he's appealing to the staunch members of his party and leading them into the future.Â
"I told them when I was running for this office that I was going to drag them, kicking and screaming if need be, into the 21st century. And I'm doing it."
The party has just announced that through meetings they are are joining forces with the Log Cabin Republicans of Nevada, which is a group of LGBT Republicans. While that group exists nationwide, this is the first time such a partnership has been hammered out.Â
"What it means is that we will be working together to attract more and more from the LGBT community here. We have the same values and beliefs. Some just don't realize it yet. We believe in smaller government, in turning the economy around, in personal rights and freedoms," Khan says.Â
"The Republican party is the one that freed the slaves, that fought for women's rights to vote. We are the party of freedom and personal responsibility. And if we can really get our values out there, there's no doubt in my mind that we can grow our base. Not just with the LGBT community, but with Latinos and so many other minorities. We are excited about this partnership and what lies ahead for the party," he adds.
So the two groups have scheduled a meet and greet for anyone interested in learning more about both groups and meeting elected Republican officials in office here. It's this Friday at the Coney Island Bar and Restaurant at 2644 Prater Way in Sparks, starting at 5 pm..
