The Washoe County School District held a community meeting Monday night to discuss a major rebuilding project for O’Brien STEM Academy.
The school, like others in Washoe County, was going to be expanded to allow for 6th graders as well as 7th and 8th graders.
But officials say the changes wouldn’t be enough to relieve overcrowding in the North Valleys community.
Now, the school district wants to build a brand new school right behind the current site for O’Brien Middle School.
It would cost about $65 Million to $75 Million, which is comparable to the cost of renovating and expanding the existing middle school.
Once it is finished in 2022, the old school would be torn down the next summer.
Officials say the new building would make the school equitable to other, newer schools in the area.
On Tuesday the Capital Funding Protection Committee will go in front of the Board of Trustees and present a preliminary design for about $500,000 of funding.
