A former school teacher charged with murder in the shooting of an unarmed trespasser at a vacant home he owns in Sparks is due back in court in a case that has drawn attention to Nevada's "stand your ground" law.
73-year-old Wayne Burgarello says he was acting in self-defense when he shot and killed a man and seriously wounded a woman he found inside the home in February.
Prosecutors say Burgarello told police he had considered guarding the often-burglarized duplex in the past but was concerned he might shoot a child.
Detectives say Burgarello shot 34-year-old Cody Devine five times, once in the head.
The former artist and teacher is scheduled to appear Wednesday at a 9 a.m. status hearing in Reno before Washoe District Judge Patrick Flanagan.
