The California Department of Public Health announced Friday that the state reported a record 585 COVID-19 deaths in a single day. The department said there were more than 47,000 new confirmed cases, bringing the total to more than 2.29 million total cases.
In comparison, Nevada has reported 227,046 total cases. Nevada reported 697 COVID-19 deaths for the entire month of December.
California Governor Gavin Newsom says the state will begin collaborating with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to upgrade outdated oxygen delivery systems at six Los Angeles area hospitals.Â
California became the third state to exceed 25,000 COVID-19 deaths since the start of the pandemic.Â
