Yesterday's disappearance of a 4-year-old South Reno girl is serving as a good reminder to make sure your child's information is up to date.
“Those first few moments are golden,” says Bob Harmon with the Washoe County Sheriff's Office. “Equally as golden as having an updated and accurate description of that child.”
Harmon says it is important to communicate with your child. If they went missing, establish a place to meet. Also, make sure the child knows they are not in the wrong.
“You need to reassure them that under no circumstances will they ever be in trouble,” said Harmon.
Harmon recommends downloading and installing the AlertID app. The ‘My Family Wallet' lets parents have the most up to date information about their kids from hair color to shoes.
The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children recommends calling law enforcement immediately if your child were to disappear. Time is of the essence.
Search your house, from closets to cars.
If your child gets lost in a store or mall, call security or a manager so an action plan can be implemented.
“You never want your child to go missing,” said Harmon. “It is every parent's worst nightmare. But the best thing you can do for that child is prepare yourself and that child.”
