Educators, advocates and parents met today to talk about resources and options available for families of kids with disabilities. The conference also educated parents on how to look at the issue through a legal lens.

The goal is to educate parents on how to find answers to legal questions and how to get services for kids with disabilities. Since every child is different and disabilities are so unique, sometimes it can be hard to get through the systems.

“You have to have a uniquely designed program, and that’s what the law makes clear, that the child is entitled to free, appropriate public education specifically designed to meet the kids specific needs,” says Lawyer Pete Wright.

He says one of the things parents need to do is to document events properly. Since one size does not fit all when we talk about disabilities, getting the right service can be hard to find, especially since it’s so expensive. He also says it’s not impossible and every parent should be aware of what they are entitled to.

“I think parents feel overwhelmed and in fear that the school knows what they are talking about, and if they don’t have the money to provide the services, there is no point in asking for it. If it’s clear the kid needs it, there is no question about that, they got to provide it, and they have to contract privately.” he says.
