A new report reveals a rape allegation against former NBC Today Show co-anchor Matt Lauer, and a claim it was ignored.
Variety magazine reveals that in an interview with journalist Ronan Farrow, former NBC News employee Brooke Nevils says Lauer raped her in a hotel room at the 2014 Sochi Olympics.
The disturbing account is detailed in Farrow's upcoming book "Catch & Kill."
In 2017, when the #MeToo Movement gained momentum with the downfall of Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein, Farrow says Nevils confided in former Today Show co-anchor Meredith Vieira about the alleged assault. Vieira urged Nevils to "file a formal complaint report with NBC's...human resources", which Farrow says she did.
The accusations ultimately led to Lauer's firing.
According to Nevils, after Lauer was fired, she learned that NBC News President Noah Oppenheim and Chairman Andrew Lack were "emphasizing that the incident had not been 'criminal' or an 'assault.'"
After a five-month internal investigation, NBC Universal reported in May 2018 that no one in leadership or authority positions at NBC News "received any complaints about Lauer's workplace behavior prior to November 27, 2017."
NBC News said in a statement: "Matt Lauer's conduct was appalling, horrific and reprehensible, as we said at the time. That's why he was fired within 24 hours of us first learning of the complaint. Our hearts break again for our colleague."
CBS News reached out overnight to representatives for Nevils, Lauer, Oppenheim and Lack but have not heard back. Sources at NBC News told Variety they haven't read the book yet, but they plan to defend the company's decisions against any of Farrow's claims.
Early Wednesday, The Hollywood Reporter published a letter from Lauer, reacting to the new allegations.
In it, Lauer confirms an affair with Nevils, but he says, "I have never assaulted anyone or forced anyone to have sex. Period...Anyone who knows me will tell you I am a very private person. I had no desire to write this, but I had no choice."

CBS News previously fired Charlie Rose after several women accused the veteran newsman of sexual misconduct while PBS has terminated its relationship with Rose. Rose had co-hosted the 'CBS This Morning' show since 2012.
Also, CBS Board of Directors denied former CEO Les Moonves his severance last year after concluding that he violated company policy and did not cooperate with an investigation into sexual misconduct allegations.
Moonves, one of television's most influential figures, was ousted in September 2018 after allegations from women who said he subjected them to mistreatment including forced oral sex, groping and retaliation if they resisted.
